Biblioteca Marciana: Venice’s Historic Treasure Trove of Greek Knowledge

Tucked in the heart of St. Mark’s Square stands one of the most important cultural institutions for the Greek world outside Greece itself — the historic Biblioteca Marciana.

Often called one of the finest libraries in the world, the Marciana holds an extraordinary collection of Greek, Latin, and Oriental manuscripts, making it a vital center for classical studies and Hellenic heritage.

In 1468, an important Greek scholar and leading humanist who had fled to Italy a few years before the fall of Constantinople, Basilios Bessarion, presented his precious collection to the Senate of Venice.

About a thousand Greek and Latin manuscripts, books, and prints. Bessarion saw Venice as the successor to the Byzantine Empire and the Italian city's library as a possible cultural treasure trove that could be used by the Greeks who had lost their homeland.

His generous donation would set in motion the project for a public library worthy of the donation and the city’s new role as the leading capital of the Eastern Mediterranean. He would not live to see the onset of the works carried out right in front of the western facade of Doge’s Palace in 1537.

Architectural Masterpiece

Designed by the great Renaissance architect Jacopo Sansovino and completed in 1588, the Biblioteca Marciana is considered a pinnacle of Venetian Renaissance architecture. American art historian Frederick Hartt described it as “surely one of the most satisfying structures in Italian architectural history.”

Its vast collection includes:

  • 622,804 volumes

  • 2,887 incunabula (books printed before 1501)

  • 13,113 manuscripts

  • 24,069 sixteenth-century books

Of special importance is its priceless collection of ancient and medieval Greek manuscripts, which preserve many texts of immense historical and literary value.

A Must-Visit for Greek Travellers

For Greeks and philhellenes visiting Venice, the Biblioteca Marciana offers a profound connection to their cultural roots. After exploring its grand halls and priceless treasures, visitors can enjoy a coffee in the world-famous St. Mark’s Square while admiring the library’s elegant façade.
