Bucharest is an ideal city break destination, offering a diverse array of attractions including royal palaces, picturesque parks, restaurants, and thermal springs. The city showcases a unique architectural mix, blending grand, historic residences with communist-era structures and modern developments.

Top Places to Visit

  • The Old Town: The city's historic core features cobblestone streets lined with vibrant restaurants and shops, alongside elegant palaces, medieval ruins, and Orthodox masterpieces like the Stavropoleos Monastery. Be sure to wander through Pasajul Macca-Vilacrosse or browse the shelves at Cărturești Carusel, a beautiful bookstore located inside a restored 19th-century bank.

  • Calea Victoriei (Victory Avenue): A vibrant lifestyle hub famous for its boutiques and landmark architecture, including the Romanian Athenaeum (the most prestigious concert hall), the Royal Palace (housing the National Museum of Art), and the iconic CEC Palace.

  • Therme București: one of Europe’s largest thermal spa and wellness centers. It uses thermal water to supply numerous indoor/outdoor pools, saunas, and relaxation areas, making it a major attraction open year-round. For the better experience buy your ticket in advance via official website  and get there by 9:00  - 10:00 am.

  • The Palace of the Parliament: a colossal communist monument which is the world's heaviest and second largest administrative building in the world that now serves as the seat of Romania's Parliament and houses several museums. If you wish to explore the interior, tours must be reserved at least 24 hours in advance.

  • The People’s Salvation Cathedral: Located behind the Parliament, this is the world's tallest Orthodox church, newly consecrated in October 2025. Before visiting, check the official website, as opening hours are limited while final interior mosaics are being completed.

  • King Michael I Park (Herăstrău): The city’s largest park, centered around a massive lake. It is a hub for cycling and lakeside dining, and home to the Japanese Garden and the Village Museum.

  • Dimitrie Gusti National Village Museum: An open-air museum showcasing traditional rural architecture from every corner of Romania.

  • The Arch of Triumph: A 27-meter-high monument commemorating Romania’s victory in WWI. It is highly recommended to climb the internal stairs for a great city view.

  • Cișmigiu Gardens: The city's oldest public park, featuring a lake for boating in summer and ice skating in winter.

Useful Tips

  1. Avoid visiting in mid-summer (especially July) if possible. Temperatures can soar above 40°C, turning the concrete city into what locals call Cuptor (the oven). If you do visit then, plan your walking for the early morning or late evening.

  2. The official currency is the Leu (RON), not the Euro. Card payments are widely supported; minimal cash is required for souvenirs or street food.

  3. If traveling by car, book accommodation with guaranteed parking. Bucharest faces a chronic shortage of public spaces. To avoid expensive fines or the stress of circling the block, ensure your hotel has private parking and use the ‘Am Parcat’ app for official payments.

  4. Public transport is the best way to navigate. Roads get very busy during rush hour, and you can lose hours in traffic. Use the Metro for the fastest travel; it is clean and simple to navigate. You can tap your bank card directly at the turnstiles. For buses or trams, download the ‘24pay’ app to buy tickets valid for 90 minutes.

  5. Use Uber or Bolt if you need to use a taxi. They are affordable, and you will see the price upfront.

  6. Tipping is expected in restaurants, typically around 10–15% of the bill.

I hope these insights ensure a smooth, enjoyable visit and help you make the most of your time in the Romanian capital. Safe travels!
