The History of Mother’s Day: From Ancient Traditions to Modern Celebration
As the second Sunday of May approaches each year, families across countries like Australia prepare to honour mothers with gifts, meals and time together. While the modern celebration is widely embraced, the origins of Mother’s Day stretch back thousands of years, rooted in ancient traditions and evolving into the global occasion we recognise today.

Ancient origins
The earliest forms of Mother’s Day can be traced to ancient Greek and Roman civilisations. In ancient Greece, spring festivals were held in honour of Rhea, the mother of the gods and wife of Cronus. These celebrations paid tribute to motherhood and fertility.
Similarly, the Romans honoured the mother goddess Cybele during a festival known as Hilaria, celebrated in mid-March. The festivities lasted several days and included parades, games and offerings at her temple.
Religious traditions and “Mothering Sunday”
In early Christian traditions, a day was dedicated to honouring the Virgin Mary during Lent. This evolved into “Mothering Sunday,” observed on the fourth Sunday of Lent, particularly in England. Over time, it became a day when people would return to their “mother church” and spend time with family.
The modern movement begins
The modern concept of Mother’s Day began to take shape in the United States during the 19th century. Activists such as Ann Reeves Jarvis established “Mother’s Day Work Clubs” in the 1860s to promote better health and childcare practices.
Following the American Civil War, these initiatives expanded into events like “Mother’s Friendship Day,” aimed at fostering reconciliation between communities.
Another key figure, Julia Ward Howe, advocated for peace through her 1870 “Mother’s Day Proclamation,” calling on mothers to unite against war.
Establishing an official holiday
The official Mother’s Day holiday was established by Anna Jarvis, daughter of Ann Reeves Jarvis. After her mother’s death in 1905, she campaigned to create a national day to honour mothers’ sacrifices.
In 1908, she organised the first official celebration, which gained widespread support. Through persistent campaigning, the idea spread rapidly across the United States.
In 1914, U.S. President Woodrow Wilson officially declared the second Sunday in May as Mother’s Day, establishing it as a national holiday.
Mother’s Day today
Today, Mother’s Day is celebrated worldwide, including in countries such as the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, Japan and many others.
While traditions vary, the core idea remains the same — expressing gratitude and appreciation for mothers. Celebrations often include:
Breakfast in bed or family meals
Gifts such as flowers, chocolates and cards
Spending quality time together
For those unable to be with their mothers in person, phone calls and messages have become a meaningful way to connect — making Mother’s Day one of the busiest days of the year for communication.
From ancient festivals honouring maternal figures to a globally recognised day of appreciation, Mother’s Day continues to evolve while maintaining its timeless purpose: celebrating the role of mothers in our lives.
