Karpathos Ranks Among Mediterranean’s Hidden Gems
The island of Karpathos has emerged as one of the most authentic and rising tourism destinations in the Mediterranean for 2026, according to a new list by Austrian news website oe24.at highlighting the region’s most beautiful “hidden gems” for the upcoming summer.

The international recognition from one of Austria’s largest news and entertainment platforms, with a wide audience across Germany and Switzerland, confirmed the island’s growing appeal in foreign markets as a destination that combined authenticity, exotic beauty, contrasting natural landscapes and high-quality travel experiences.
The report stated that Karpathos stood out for its unique location between Crete and Rhodes, remaining largely unaffected by mass tourism development. It noted that the island offered a balanced mix of unspoilt landscapes and mild tourism activity, with the southern part featuring beautiful beaches and organised yet low-key infrastructure, while the northern region maintained a wilder and more captivating character.
The article also highlighted the traditional village of Olympos, where local customs and cultural heritage remained alive, giving visitors a rare opportunity to connect with the island’s history and traditions. Karpathos was recommended as an ideal destination for travellers seeking to combine outdoor activities with authentic cultural experiences, far from crowded tourist centres.
The list also included island destinations from Italy, Spain, France and Croatia, reflecting a broader international trend towards less commercialised yet equally stunning travel locations.
This recognition aligned with the strategic efforts of the Municipality of Karpathos to promote the island in international markets by showcasing its unique attributes, including activities, traditions, gastronomy, quality services and exceptional natural beauty.

The municipality implemented a series of initiatives aimed at strengthening Karpathos’ image both in Greece and abroad as an authentic destination offering life-changing experiences. These included partnerships with airlines and tour operators, digital campaigns, presentations and participation in international tourism exhibitions, as well as organising adventure festivals, cultural and gastronomy-focused events, and hosting professional and media missions.
